Mark Mazz in conversation with comic genius and legend, Irwin Hasen, who has drawn comics for nearly a century. Irwin Hasen, age 91, is a Bronx / Manhatten artist and a veteran comic strip artist responsible for creating the superhero Wildcat along with writer Bill Finger, in Sensation comics #1, in 1942 which featured the Justice Society Of America. Hasen also created news strip character, Dondi. Irwin received the National Cartoonist Society Story Award for Dondi in 1961 and 1962.

Bronx Heroes 1 @ Hostos Community College. March 14, 2009.Bronx Heroes: Comic Convention will take place in the C-Lobby on Saturday, March 14th, from 12:00 noon
to 5:00pm. Come and meet, converse and network with Bronx comic book artists who will be selling their
publications and sharing their art. A Panel Discussion, revolving around the themes and aesthetics that have
inspired the making and the art of comic books, will be held from 2:00-4:00pm in the Longwood Art Gallery.
These activities are being presented in conjunction with that afternoon’s Saturday Culture Trolley.
Additionally, a Dream Sequence: Curator and Artists’ Talk will take place at the gallery on Saturday, May 9th,
from 1:00-3:00pm in conjunction with the closing of the show. Admission is free and all are welcome.
The Longwood Art Gallery is located on the campus of Hostos Community College (450 Grand Concourse
at 149th Street) in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx. The college is easily accessible by the # 2, 4 and 5

(February 20, 2009 – Bronx, NY) The Longwood Art Gallery @ Hostos, the
contemporary art center of The Bronx Council on the Arts (BCA), proudly presents Dream
Sequence, curated by Ray Felix. The opening reception takes place on March 4th from 5:00- 9:00pm in conjunction with BCA’s Bronx Culture Trolley. The show will be on view through May 9, 2009. Dream Sequence explores the themes of identity, socialism, sexuality, and the unconscious state of dreaming using comic books, drawing, illustration, painting, photography, sculpture and video. Participating artists include Richard Ackoon, Gary Camp, Momo Felix, Ray Felix, Ruth Fernandez,
Dmitry Gubin, Marcus Jones, KAZ, Rene iatba, Ivan Monforte, Ed Mouzon, Helena Petersen, David Quiles, Wanda Raimundi-Ortiz, Timothy Ryan, Jean Rosa-Segarra, Luis Sierra, Hidemi Takagi, Arlen Schumer, Bedel Tiscareno, Chris Torres, Ed Traquino and Ivan Velez. Curator Ray Felix is Bronx-based visual artist who is known for his controversial comics that tackle religious dogma, politics, human behavior and superheroes. Felix is responsible for comics “GOD: The Second Coming”, “No-1 Anthology”, “LSD and X-Tasy: The Villain Assassins”: A World Without Superheroes” and “Runaway Slave” which is part of the anthology comic “Bronx Heroes”, by Creative One Comics. He received the 2002 BRIO (Bronx Recognizes its Own) Award for visual arts.
