Arguably the most influential person in American Comics, Will Eisner as an artist, entrepreneur, innovator, and visual storyteller.  Eisner enjoyed a career that encompassed comic books from their early beginnings in the 1930’s to their development as graphic novels in the late 1970's -1990’s.  Eisner also, was a champion of using comics as an educational tool in a time where comics was considered junk reading.

On display at the Poe Park Visiting Center Gallery during the months of March and April, "The 75th Anniversary of Will Eisner", the exhibit  will feature artworks from Will Eisner’s Estate, which will include Comic strips of “The Spirit”, Eisner’s graphic novels, “A Contact With God”, “Dropsie Avenue”, “Life force” and more.

Opening Reception

from 1 pm to 3:30 pm.

Join us on March 1- April 30th, 2016, to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Will Eisner's "The Spirit" @ The Poe Park Visiting Center Gallery.  Former Bronxite, Will Eisner is considered the GodFather of the comic book and an innovator of the graphic novel.   Born in New York City, Eisner, son of Jewish Immigrants, moved though out the city in his early life but  was raised in the Bronx during his primary years. Eisner discovered the art of storytelling and illustration, through his day to day activities interacting with other new immigrants and Americans on the streets of Bronx.

Eisner a graduate from DeWitt Clinton High School, learned the trade of a commercial artist and began his career developing and reinventing the Sunday Comic Strip features in Newspapers.  "The Spirit" was a syndicated feature of a  Noir styled detective, Denny Colt.  Shortly after, Eisner along with a team of Jewish Artists under the banner of Iger and Eisner, created  what is know today as the Monthly comic book.  Will Eisner is the first to view comics as an Educational tool and was the first American to coin the term "Graphic Novel" with the release of  " A Contract with God" in 1973, followed by his historical book about a dutch farm which later evolved into the borough of the Bronx, in his Graphic Novel, "Dropsie Ave".
On view at Poe Park Visiting Center will feature lithographs, prints and original art works of the famed, Will Eisner, who passed away on January 3, 2005 at age 87.

The Spirit
, the 1987 TV movie that first brought Will Eisner’s most famous creation to live-action, has finally gotten an official home video release courtesy of the Warner Archive Collection. A staple of comic convention bootleg booths for decades, The Spiritcan finally be seen in all its glory. A blend of '60s Batman-style surreal comedy and serious crime show, The Spirit doesn’t always quite hit the mark, but when it does, it’s tremendously entertaining.
